Q:  I was laid off over the summer but am employed with a new employer and will be eligible for coverage on December 1. Due to the size of the premium with the new employer’s policy I would like to have my wife and children remain on the COBRA policy with my former employer. Am I able to do this?

A:  Your wife and child can stay on Cobra up to the maximum amount of most likely 18 months, after that Cobra coverage will end.  If your Cobra coverage is receiving the reduced rate or premium, you no longer will be able to receive the reduction in cost.  If they do have the reduced premium, when you get this new job that offers Insurance the Cobra is no longer subject to the reduction, you can stay on the Cobra coverage just no longer at the reduced rate.
