Q:   What is Cal-COBRA?

A:   Cal-COBRA is a law issued by the State of California that is like the Federal law COBRA. Cal-COBRA applies to companies that have between 2 and 19 employees. It will allow you to keep your insurance offered to you by your past employer for up to 36 months. Some people use Cal-COBRA as an extension to their COBRA. When the original 18 months of continuation coverage ends, you may be able to purchase an additional 18 months of health insurance. You may have to contact either your previous employer or your state insurance commisioner. You may also visit www.naic.org for more state specific information.
