Q:  I understand that New York State passed some kind of law in 2009 that extended the COBRA coverage period to a max of 36 months (from 18), regardless of the number of company employees. Is this true? Are their any other qualifications?

A:  I am not familiar with these changes, COBRA is an option to some individuals for up to 36 months depending on the qualifying event, but I am not sure about in New York something changing.  You can go to www.dol.gov/COBRA and see if you can find any information pertaining to that, they are who oversees the COBRA law.
