Q: I was laid off in early January and my insurance ended in early February. I finally got my COBRA forms (after calling my employer multiple times about it) a month later. I immediately filled them out and returned them with a check for the premium, which my bank account says has now been cashed. I really need to go to the doctor (I'm 19 wks pregnant and haven't been to the doctor since 5wks due to these issues), but I do not trust my company's COBRA admins to send my information in a timely manner. If I go to the doctor, do I use my SSN or my previous group insurance ID? I know I am covered under COBRA (since 1. they cashed the check and 2. COBRA is retroactive), but what information does my doctor need for billing?
A: Cobra is a continuation of the same coverage you had when you were working, therefore you can most likely use your same Insurance card and call to verify benefits and bill the same Insurance Company you had previously. I would verify with your past employer or Cobra admin that everything is active and your Cobra is up to date.
