Q: One of our previous employees has exhausted her 18 months on COBRA and would like to continue coverage under COBRA for her dependent only (dependent was covered during the first 18 months). Can the dependent continue for another 18 months?
A: A dependent may become entitled to an 18 month extension for a total of 36 months only if a second qualifying event occurs. A second qualifying event is the death of the employee, the divorce or legal separation of the employee and their spouse, if the employee becomes entitled to Medicare or a child's loss of dependent status.
