Q: I left my job in September of 2009 and I have been on Cobra ever since then. All I have elected to have was Health and Vision Coverage, not Dental Insurance. I recently got a temp to perm job that offers me the full benefit package (Health, Vision, Life, Dental, 401K, Life Insurance, etc.) All I want is their Dental Insurance. If I elect the Dental Insurance, will I loose the Cobra health insurance that I currently have from my former employer?
A: Electing the Dental coverage should not have an affect on your Cobra coverage, but if you are receiving the reduction in the cost of your Cobra, the stimulus. Then you are no longer going to be entitled to the reduction any longer, because you have other Insurance available to you. But if you simply are paying for Cobra on your own, electing the Dental should not have any affect on your benefits. You could double check with your Cobra Administrator the person handling your benefits to be sure as well.
