Q:  I was told that if I do not go with COBRA insurance and enroll with an alternative insurance that I will lose my rights for new heath insurance under Federal law. What does that mean?

A: An employers’ alternative coverage to COBRA can include a FMLA leave, workman’s compensation leave, disability leaves, severance packages and retiree benefit packages.

Your previous employer may provide you with the right to elect alternative group health coverage instead of the normal COBRA continuation coverageIf you elect alternative coverage, you will lose all rights to the COBRA continuation coverage.
