Q:I was laid off from my job and still have not received COBRA information from my former employer. Aren't they obligated by law to send me the information within 45 days? What steps can I take if I do not receive any response from them? Will I become ineligible if they do not send my paperwork soon?

A: Your employer legally has up to 45 days to get to you the information you need to elect COBRA. You will need to contact your previous employer to request a COBRA packet and they will be able to tell you the monthly cost.

If your employer can not answer your questions or does not comply, you can call the Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
