Q: Was my company suppose to offer me this insurance after I left, because the place I work now the personnel lady told me that they should have offered me this kind of insurance. I am asking you this because after two weeks at my new employment, I got sick and accumulated a hefty medical bill.

A: If your previous employer has more than 20 employees they are subject to COBRA law and are required to provide you with the continuation of their group policy.  They have up to 45 days from your last day of work or the last day of group benefits to mail you the COBRA packet.  If your previous employer doesn't comply with COBRA laws, they can be fined daily by the US Department of Labor.  Penalties for COBRA non-compliance are extremely severe.
