My son worked for Pepsi. Pepsi went a full 3 weeks doing whatever they need to do when my son terminated his employment to go to another job. It took even more time for him to get his packet. He called to add his new wife and was denied because it's been 31 days since they married. Why is this? How can this be?

A: COBRA is not an insurance company.

COBRA is a federal law that requires employers with 20 or more employees to offer the continuation of the same group health care coverage after you've voluntarily or involuntarily left your job, or have had your work hours reduced.

Because COBRA is simply the continuation of the same coverage you had through a previous employer, you would need to contact the COBRA Administrator for the previous employer to cancel coverage. Typically, the COBRA Administrator is in the HR department.

There are alternatives to COBRA continuation available. Click here for a quote, or call us at 1-877-262-7241 (8am-5pm CST) and we can help you find an alternative plan.
