Q: I elected COBRA coverage when I lost my job last September. I paid the premiums on time through December. I quit making the payments in January because I could no longer afford them. I just went through an emergency surgery in June and the bills are starting to pour in. Is there any way to pay the premiums now for Jan thru July so that I have retroactive coverage and then my surgery would be covered?
A: Payments that are made after the 30 day grace period do not have tobe accepted by your previous employer and your COBRA continuation coveragewill be terminated. However, if your previous employer and their insurance is willing to accept the payment after the grace period you would be required to pay all premiums to date. It has been more than six months since your COBRA continuation ended, you may not be able to get it reinstatedYour previous employer or plan administrator will be able to tell you if you are eligible for reinstatement.
