Q: I am 69 years old and have Medicare Part A. I cannot sign up for Medicare Part B until Jan. 2008 and the Part B will become effective July 2008. My job was eliminated in March of 2006 and I am enrolled in cobra. My coverage will end Oct 28 2007. Since I cannot get Medigap insurance unless I have Part B Medicare, I will have a gap of 8 months with only partial medical insurance coverage. Is there anyway I can extend cobra for an additional 8 months? I am not disabled. Thank you for any information you can give me.
A: There are only a few ways that a person would be able to extend their COBRA coverage.
1. If you are deemed legally disabled before or within the first 60 days of COBRA coverage, you are eligible for an additional 11 months. The total coverage time would be up to 29 months.
2. If at any time during the continuation coverage have encountered another qualifying event.
Generally, multiple qualifying events are subject to the spouse and/or dependents. Here is a list of events:
--Death of covered employee
--Employee's entitlement to Medicare
--Divorce or legal separation from covered employee
--Loss of dependent child status
We may have a product available to you that could give you discounts on medical expences. It is not an insurance, but could help with medical cost during the time you need it the most. You can visit www.corehealthinsurance.com for more information and monthly costs.
