Q: I chagned jobs in June. My health insurance continued through the end of June. I was told by HR that I had 60 days from the time my health insurance stopped to decide whether to enroll in COBRA, meaning the end of August. I have not yet officially enrolled in COBRA as I was told I have until August 31. However, in July, I had to seek medical attention on a couple of occasions. If I decide at the end of August NOT to enroll in COBRA, will I be responsible for my medical bills from July, even though my insurance has already paid for them? Or will the bills have been covered by my insurance?
A: You do have an election period of 60 days from the last day of insurance coverage. If you opt not to choose to continue with the group health plan offered to you by the past employer, your coverage will end the last day of June. Therefore, the medical expenses that you are responsible for in the month of July would not be covered under an insurance policy. If you do make a payment, the policy will be reinstated and coverage will be in force starting the 1st of July (from the dates and information you gave me).If the insurance was paid for July and August, you can submit those bills for reimbursement.
