Q: I was told that I would not be able to qualify for other insurance policies as long as I am eligible for Cobra. How long am I eligible for Cobra if I resigned? If I elect to choose Cobra, will I be locked in for a period of time or can I cancel Cobra coverage after a given time?

A:   COBRA is a continuation of your previous employer’s group health policy.  COBRA law gives you the right to have insurance if there is no other insurance available to you. An employee can remain on COBRA for a maximum of 18 months.  You can cancel your COBRA continuation when you get other insurance through a new employer or on your own.   However, if you are eligible for COBRA you will not be able to obtain any state funded health insurance programs until the 18 months of COBRA ends.
