Q: My divorce recently became final. My ex-husband is ordered to pay for my COBRA coverage through his employer. Should this be taking this long? I am worried. Right now I do not have any insurance. I have only been denied coverage from my ex-husband's insurance coverage he has with his employer. Can I find out if I do now have coverage and If my ex actually filled out the necessary form?
A: The COBRA election process can be lengthy. From the date that your insurance was terminated, the employer/administrator has up to 45 days to get an election letter to you in the mail. From the day that letter is sent, you then have up to 60 days to make that election. Once that payment is made in a timely manner, your coverage will pick up right where it left off. There should be no lapse in coverage. If you are wondering if your policy has been reinstated, you can simply contact the insurance company to verify coverage. If you are not covered, you can contact the employer who is responsible for the insurance. They may have the answers you are looking for.
