Q:    Hi there I have Anthem insurance and my job ends on Sept 30.  I plan on having surgery before than, but just incase I have to wait until Oct will cobra cover my gastric bypass surgery if its approved with Anthem before the job ends in September 30, 2007. I plan on taking cobra after my job is fazed out.

A:  COBRA is the name of a federal law, not an insurance company. The law will allow you to continue the same Anthem insurance that you had. The difference being that you will be responsible for at least 100% of the monthly premium. If your employer has more than 20 employees, they are legally obligated to send an election letter to you in the mail. If you have question regarding your insurance coverage during your extension, you should be able to call the number on the back of your insurance card. Anthem should be able to verify benefits for you.
