Q: At the end of June I signed up for COBRA with my employer and paid them the first month's (July's) premium. I have heard nothing at all since then. I know I am currently covered, but when are you going to send me a bill for August?
A: Your previous employer or plan administrator is not required by COBRA law to provide you with coupons or a monthly statement. It is your responsibility to pay for the COBRA continuation and to make sure it is paid on time. If you have been consistently receiving a statement each month and now haven’t, you need to contact your previous employer or plan administrator. Be sure to keep the address and phone of the plan administrator in a safe place. They will be included in the COBRA packet you initially received. That way if your statement is late you will be able to mail your payment to them in a timely manner.
