Q: My son age 27 can continue cobra for 10 more months. He will be enrolling in a university. With group coverage, however it is not as comprehensive as the current cobra coverage. Can he continue the COBRA for 10 more months while simultaneously holding the university plan? If he does not use the university. Plan for the next 10 months will anyone know he has it?
A: A person can not have COBRA continuation and another insurance coverage at the same time unless they have a pre-existing condition and the other insurance doesn't cover it. Routinely insurance companies send out questionnaires about other insurance companies. If this questionnaire is not completed properly or untruthfully, the insurance company can deny coverage and/or void the insurance policy. Your son should keep the COBRA coverage and then apply for a student health insurance policy shortly before the COBRA ends.
