Q: My company recently closed. I had family coverage and intend to convert to COBRA. My children were covered as students as well. They intent not to return to school in the fall and will therefore lose student dependent status. One child is healthy the other is Type 1. What are my options to obtain coverage for them? Does COBRA rights protect the loss of student status & group health coverage?
A One of the qualifying events for an employee’s dependent child is if they lose coverage because they graduate high school or college, leave college or not a full-time college student and reach a specific age. Both of your children can continue your group health plan through COBRA for up to 18 months.Since this is a continuation of your employer’s group health policy, pre-existing conditions that were covered before will be covered with COBRA.
