Q:  I had A  Healthcare plan from my company till February 2007.Later I switched to COBRA. Every month I'm paying $1165 towards the premium. But my doctor bills are not paid by Health Care Company. They say COBRA is not updating the records. COBRA says they updated the records. Both are blaming each other. My sons bills from March to till date are unpaid and I'm receiving bunches of bills from doctor's office. This is a MENTAL TRAUMA for me. Whom to approach and how to resolve the issue? I'm extremely frustrated.

A:  COBRA is a Federal Law. Your past employer hires a third party administrator that handles all of your continuation coverage billings, payments, mailing and communications. When you are making your monthly payments you are paying either the administrator or the past employer who in turn pays the insurance company to continue your coverage. Your insurance should not have changed. Your premium amount should have; hence the high cost. If you are having problems with claims then the insurance company should be questioned. If the insurance has not received your payment then it is the administrator or the past employer whom you need to question. Since COBRA is a Federal law and if you think there is non compliance issues involved, you may want to contact the Department of Labor. They are a part of the government that enforces that law. You can contact them by calling 1-866-487-2365.
