Q: We are covered under the Florida Health Care Plan - We hope to move to SC early next year - Would we be eligible for coverage under Cobra as our present insurance Florida Health Care - We are not sure if this company only operates in Florida ?
A: If your past employer has more than 20 employees then they are legally obligated to offer you an extension of their group health plan no matter if you are moving or not. The one thing that you may want to check into is if your insurance carrier has providers in the state that you are moving to. You can call the phone number on the back of your insurance card to get provider information. If you find that you will not be covered in the state you are moving you can check with your employer to see if an alternate plan is available for you in that state. If there is not, then COBRA will not benefit you.
