Q: I was wondering if you could tell us what may be best (financially) to choose based on our situation. My husband will be changing jobs soon, going to a company that still has to set up their insurance plan. We will have to obtain transition coverage for about 2 months. We currently pay a little over $300 per month (out of my husband's check) which is 25% of the plan's cost. We have three small children and I will be delivering our 4th during the transition period. Otherwise, we are all in excellent health. I saw that COBRA may be about $800 per month for us. I also saw alternate plans on your site. Would we qualify for one of those, with me being pregnant? If so, which one? Are there any other alternatives, such as the rest of my family taking one insurance while I take COBRA? Thanks very much!!
A: The Alternative plans could be an option for your family. They will not cover any preexisting medical conditions or a pregnancy. Your best option with a pregnancy would be to elect COBRA. It will be an extension of the same coverage that you have and you will know that the pregnancy and birth will be covered. (If it is now) Your family can choose the lower cost option and you could choose the continuation just for yourself. You will get an election notice in the mail. You can make your coverage choices then. If you have detailed questions regarding your coverage, you can contact the HR department or the insurance company.
