Q: My mother has had her own coverage thru her employer for the past year and she is on my father’s COBRA plan as well (for the past 6 months). She is no longer working for her employer and is now being offered cobra. Can she stay on the COBRA plan of my father as well as the COBRA plan now offered to her? She would rather have the double coverage that she has been use to.
A:Your mother can not have another insurance company and COBRA or have COBRA continuation through two different employer’s health plans at the same time. She will not be eligible for your father’s COBRA continuation if she is still on COBRA from her previous employer.Since she can only have one, she should choose the one that has the best coverage for her needs.
