Q: I am going to be leaving my current job and will need to go on COBRA insurance. I am curious of the differences between COBRA continuation and regular COBRA insurance. I am pregnant and want to make sure I'll be covered for all maternity related issues and also in any state, as I am moving to IL.
A: There are many different terms that are used to describe COBRA: COBRA continuation, COBRA coverage, COBRA insurance, or just COBRA. All these term mean the same thing. It is a federal law (not an insurance company) that lets an employee continue the employer’s group health insurance when a qualifying event occurs. Leaving a job is considered a qualifying event.
If there was coverage for pregnancy and maternity on the employer’s group health plan before you left, then there will be coverage for it on COBRA. You should talk to your employer about moving to a different state. If the group health plan can’t be used in a different state because it is an HMO or PPO then your employer must offer you a policy that you can use at your new residence.
