Q:We are opening an office in New York but will only have 1 employee based there. I want to know what the Cobra plan covers and how we can get employees on your insurance plan?
A: Under COBRA law, an employer with more than 20 employees must offer continuation of their group health insurance to an employee and their dependents when a qualifying event occurs.
What is a qualifying event?
For the employee:
1. Voluntary or involuntary termination of employment (unless due to gross misconduct)
2. Your working hours have been reduced
These events apply to the employee’s covered spouses and the dependants.
1. Death of employee.
2. Divorce or legal separation.
3. Loss of dependant status, or when a child comes off of employees insurance due to age or school status.
