Q:  I am 59 yr old with some health issues.  I plan to take COBRA coverage in March of 2008. What is the most affordable strategy for 59-65 (Medicare date)? How do I max out COBRA?

A:  The employee can continue on COBRA for a maximum of 18 months.  If the employee becomes disabled before they start COBRA or during the first 60 days of COBRA continuation they can extend COBRA for an additional 11 months for a total of 29 months.  You may be eligible to convert your COBRA coverage to an individual policy from your insurance if they offer an individual policy.  You have 30 days from the termination date of COBRA to request this individual policy.
