Q: My sister was covered under her husband's insurance and he passed away March 2006. She continued with the COBRA plan and is eligible for 36 months. It stops April 2009. Unfortunately, in November of 2006 she was diagnosed with kidney cancer and they removed her kidney. She continues to have testing done and will always be a cancer patient. She lives in Georgia and they do not have and as risk state insurance. Can she get coverage with another insurance that will probable have a pre-existing condition clause hopefully only for 12 months and still have COBRA cover what the other one won't and then when COBRA runs she has her pre=existing waiting period with the other insurance and therefore will not be without coverage for her cancer
A: You are allowed to have other insurance with your COBRA continuation only when the other insurance has pre-existing condition clauses or limitations. However, she may have a difficult time finding other insurance that she will qualify for due to her medical history.
