Q: I will be going on Medicare as of Dec 1, 2007. I had retired on October 1, 1998, under their early retirement program. The employer had us covered under their insurance plan since my retirement, which I paid a monthly premium. Now, that I'm going on Medicare, this insurance coverage will stop. According to the employer at the time of my retirement, my wife can be covered for a time of 36 months after I go on Medicare. What do I need to do, in order to continue the coverage for my wife?
A: You will need to contact your previous employer’s HR department or benefits manager and let them know that you want COBRA continuation for your wife. It is the employer’s responsibility to make sure you receive the COBRA packet which includes the election form. They have up to 45 days after the qualifying event to mail you the paperwork, so you may not receive them until December.
