Q: My health/dental insurance was covered under my previous employer through July 31, 2007. Coverage with my new employer is effective date of hire (August 20, 2007). I do not have dependents on my coverage but my Cobra payment is $351. Do I need to pay this for the 20 days that I am not covered?
A: COBRA coverage is retro-active to the last day of group benefits once you complete the elect form and make your 1st COBRA payment. If the 1st payment is not received by the due date, then you will lose your COBRA rights. Any claims during the election period before you became enrolled in your new employer’s plan will not be paid. If you had claims then you should submit the election form with payment and the insurance company will pay them.
