Q: I was laid off 10/11 so coverage ends 10/31. Knee replacement Surgery has been approved by Premera Blue Cross, however we might not be able to have it done by 10/31. Would we have to pay one month's Cobra coverage if the surgery went into early November?

A:  The shortest amount of time you can have COBRA continuation is 30 days.  Your premium payments to COBRA are usually for 30 days of coverage.  If you want to get coverage for your surgery and the follow-up appointments then you will need to submit your election form and your first payment to your previous employer or their plan administrator.
