Q:I haven't received any COBRA info from employer and wanted to make sure my family would still be covered after company closes. How soon does paperwork need to be submitted and will my family still have medical coverage even though nothing has been signed?
A: If your employer closes and they do not keep their group health plan active, you would not be eligible for COBRA.Your employer will be able to tell you if you are eligible for COBRA.If COBRA is available to you, the employer has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA packet from your last day of group benefits.Once you receive the election form you have 60 days to submit it.COBRA coverage is retro-active, so there won’t be any days that you are without insurance.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
