Q: The amounts I have sent for COBRA payments should have covered the amount due. However, we are still getting past due notices. We do not want to lose the benefits. A single payment due today with today’s postmark might be late.
A: You should contact your previous employer or their plan administrator to find out your actual due date. Your employer or plan administrator does not have to send you a monthly invoice, so you will need to keep track of when the due date. The employer must give you a grace period, usually 30 days from the due date to make your payment. Your employer must honor the postmark on the envelope with your payment, no matter how late they receive it. However, your coverage can be suspended until the payment has been applied to your account.
