Q: I have a patient who moved from TX to IN. The previous employer paid for 6 months of cobra. The cobra policy was effective 4/1/07 and will term 10/31/07. The mother of our patient did not call to cancel the cobra as she thought it would term "automatically" once the new insurance took effect. Our billing office is still billing cobra, and now Anthem is asking for a coordination of benefits to be done. (I'm confused as to why since they are not being billed as primary). Anyway, my question is whether you can have cobra as a primary and a group policy as a secondary?
A: An employee and their dependents are not allowed COBRA continuation and other insurance at the same time. If they have enrolled in the new employer’s group health plan, then COBRA is no longer an option for them. However, they may be able to continue COBRA the new employer’s group plan has exclusions or limitations on pre-existing conditions that would be covered under the COBRA continuation
