Q: My husband is losing his job in 4 wks, no severance pay, or insurance, the company is closing. My youngest son who is 1 has been seeing an urologist since he was born and has a doctor appointment about every 3 months; do we need to get COBRA so our future insurance will cover him when my husband gets a new job?
A: If you husband’s employer is closing, they may not continue the group health insurance. If they cancel their group health policy, you would not be eligible for COBRA. Since COBRA continuation is not an option you will need to find an alternative policy that provide creditable coverage so, your new employer’s group plan does not put a limitation on pre-existing conditions.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
