Q:  I am a single parent. Me and my 8-year old son are currently on COBRA from my old employer. My new employer DOES NOT offer group health insurance. My Cobra insurance expires on March 31, 2008 and I don't know what I should do. This is why...my son was diagnosed Autistic at the age of 3. He takes daily medications. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2004. Both are considered preexisting conditions yet neither of us have ever had a lapse of coverage. I cannot afford a lapse of coverage for my son, as he MUST have medical insurance. What are my options? Autism is a disability and I cannot afford for him to have any lapse in coverage. I'm more concerned for my son then myself when it comes to obtaining insurance.

A:  You may want to see if your current insurance company offers a COBRA conversion policy. Also, most states offer a policy to their residents who can not get insurance or have been declined because of a medical condition or past medical history.  You will need to contact your state’s Department of Insurance to see if you are eligible.

If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
