Q:My husband has been laid off from his job for six months. The company has paid for the first six months of insurance. I called the person in charge of COBRA for the company and she said that my husband can not sign up for COBRA because they mailed us a letter last month that we did not return. We did not receive a letter last month. How can they do that?
A:Your previous employer must give you a 60 day election period to sign-up for COBRA from the time you receive the election form. If you believe your previous employer has not complied with COBRA laws, you should contact the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Herefor more information.
