Q:  I am a student and will be graduating December 15, 2007. My insurance purchased through my university will end that date and coverage through my new employer will not begin until 30 days after my start date in January 2008. Can I purchase COBRA insurance to cover me and my husband during that lapse of time? When would I need to apply for COBRA to be effective given my graduation date of December 15?

A:  COBRA is a continuation of an employer’s group health plan.  You are not eligible for COBRA if you have a student policy unless you are also an employee of the university and enrolled in their group health plan.

If you are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
