Q: I sent in my premium for 3 months coverage. I later had a claim that was denied as the plan administrator claims to not have rec'd my check. I have no way of proving that I sent in the check. All I have is a check number and a bank statement showing the check never cleared. I did not expect that I would need to call long distance to the plan administrator each time I send a check to inquire if they had rec'd my check. I expected them to notify me of a pending cancellation. I sent in a replacement check and they have refused to accept it claiming it is past due. Do I have any options? They are saying I need to call long distance each time I send a check to be sure they have rec'd it. That seems illogical.
A: Your previous employer or their plan administrator does not have to send you a monthly invoice or notify you if your premium is late. It is your responsible to make sure the payments are received by the due date. If you have a plan administrator that does not send out correspondence then it is in your best interest to call. When you call them you need to keep a history and document the date and time you called them, and the name of the person that confirmed your payment has been received.
If you have lost your opportunity for insurance with your past employer and are looking for a short term medical policy you may qualify for an Alternative policy. Click Here for more information.
