Q:  My sister in law was recently terminated from her job. She than decided become an independent business owner. Is she still eligible to subscribe to the COBRA insurance?

A:  Yes. If she is coming off a group health plan from her past employer and her past employer has more than 20 employees, she would be eligible for COBRA.  She would be continuing the same coverage that she had with them; the only difference is that she is going to be responsible for 102% of the premiums. It does not matter if she was terminated or quit on her own.  She should be able to continue COBRA for up to 18 months.
