Q: I have COBRA coverage for my wife and me. It will terminate June 1, 2008. I will be 65 on April 10, 2008. Will I lose my COBRA coverage then? What If I do not take Medicare B, do I still lose COBRA coverage? Also, the company I used to work for will change insurance companies on January 1, 2008. Do I automatically go with them?
A: Once you become entitled to Medicare Part A, even if you don’t choose Part B you will no longer be eligible for COBRA. Your COBRA coverage will end on the same day your Medicare benefits start. If your spouse is under 65 and not entitled to Medicare she can remain on COBRA. Your entitlement to Medicare is a 2ndary qualifying event and your spouse will be allowed an additional 18 months of COBRA for a maximum of 36 months. When your previous employer changes health insurance companies, your COBRA coverage will be switched to the new group plan. Your previous employer must provide you with a Summary of Plan Benefits and insurance ID cards for the new policy.
