Q:  My COBRA coverage is about to expire, I currently pay $998.38 a month. I asked for an extension in December because of my son’s disability. I was told yes they can extend it, but I will be charged a 50% rate increase, and my new rate would be $1,497.57. Is this legal?

A:  Yes. An extension of your COBRA due to a disability allows the employer to charge up to 150% of the applicable monthly costs.
