Q: I work for an insurance company. If I don't hit a certain number by 12/31/07, I will no longer be eleigible for my companies health insurance. My wife is 7 1/2 months pregnant. Will I be eleigible for COBRA? I live in California, does that make a difference in anything?
A:COBRA is a federal law that requires an employer with more than 20 employees to offer continuation of group benefits to an employee when a qualifying event occurs that causes the employee and their dependents to lose the group health benefits. The employee is responsible for paying the entire cost of COBRA.
California has a mini-COBRA available. Usually Cal-COBRA is available for residents of California that have group health insurance through a California employer and the plan is from California based insurance company. You will need to contact the California insurance department to see if you are eligible for Cal-COBRA and obtain the forms. The phone number for the California Department of insurance is 800-927-4357.
