Q:  My employer switched insurance companies in November 2007 from Anthem to Summa with an effective date of 12/1/2007. I was terminated on December 27, 2007; thus only having the Summa insurance for 1 month. My employer is a small business (only 3-4 employees). Am I eligible for COBRA?

A:   If the company has less than 20 employees they are not subject to the federal law and they do not have to offer you a continuation of their group health plan. What you will want to do is contact your state department of insurance to see if there is a state issued mini-COBRA plan that you can take advantage of. You can find more information about your state insurance by visiting www.naic.org
