Q: My husband is starting a new job on Jan 3rd. I am currently 4 months pregnant and am seeing a specialty Dr (Perinatologist) due to complications. This care is currently covered by our PPO. However, when my husband switches jobs he will have Kaiser after 90 days, which is not ideal for me, as it is best to stay with my specialist and have my baby delivered by him, since there could be complications. My question is two-part: 1. Will coverage automatically continue, or will there be a lapse period until we get the COBRA paperwork from his previous (current) employer? 2. After 90 days, can my husband switch our toddler daughter and him to his new employer's Kaiser Insurance, but keep me on the COBRA coverage so that I can keep my specialist? I will need coverage by the current PPO until mid-June.
A: COBRA is a continuation of your previous employer’s group health plan. Once you elect COBRA the insurance is retro-active. You will not have a lapse in coverage. During the election period you may not be able to provide proof that you have insurance but once the paperwork has been processed any claims that occurred during that time will be paid by the insurance company. When eligible your husband and daughter can enroll in the new employer’s group health plan and you will be allowed to keep your COBRA coverage until the 18 months is exhausted.
