Q: My husband's previous employer is changing the coverage for the employees. Does this mean our coverage changes too? The rates and the deductible are much higher on the new plan. How do we find out if he is really on Cobra? He has been paying his previous employer directly since February.
A: When your previous employer obtains a new group health plan then your COBRA coverage is transferred to the new plan. The cost and your coverages will change. The employer must provide you with a Summary of Plan Description and new ID cards for the new coverage.
Once an employee signs up for COBRA, the employer no longer pays for any part of the cost of the insurance. When you send your COBRA premiums to the previous employer, it is their responsibility to forward them to the insurance company. You can call your insurance company, their phone number is on your insurance ID card. The insurance company can confirm that you have had continuous coverage.
