Q: I recently received a new Cobra Administrators letter (my 3rd year), the 3rd one. It will only send an invoice for each month and you can not pre pay each month. The other 2 Administrators I've had did. I prepaid months in advanced so I would never be cancelled or hassle about late or missing payments. It's like they set you up to be late so they can cannel you. Do I have the right to pre-pay?
A: Since you become eligible for COBRA continuation due to a situation that causes you to no longer be employed (laid off, terminated, retire etc) and COBRA premiums can be very expensive; COBRA law requires the employer or COBRA plan administrator to allow the employees to pay their COBRA premiums on a monthly basis. The plan administrator does not have to accept more than 1 month of premium at a time. You may want to see if your plan administrator will allow you to pay your premiums by telephone or online that way you can have a confirmation that your payment was received on time. Please note that the plan administrator is not required under COBRA to send you an invoice for your premiums.
