Q:My family is currently covered by COBRA. I am currently disabled and will be entitled to Medicare after my 29th month of disability. Can my husband and son still continue to be covered by COBRA once I am on Medicare?
A:It depends; if the COBRA is through your previous employer and you become entitled to Medicare it would be considered a secondary qualifying event. The secondary qualifying event will give them an additional 7 months. The maximum anyone can remain on COBRA is 36 months. However, if the COBRA is through your husband’s previous employer and you were a dependent on his group plan, the COBRA continuation will end when the 29 months are exhausted.
