Q: I recently graduated from college and I was enrolled in their health insurance, but it runs out soon and I need to get insurance. Does COBRA work if I am not working and coming off of student health insurance through the university with a pre-existing condition? Does the university send information for enrolling in COBRA or is it not even an option for me since I was not employed by the school? Any information about this would be greatly appreciated as I have a pre-existing condition and I just need COBRA temporarily until I find a job that provides health insurance.
A: COBRA covers group health plans offered by employers (private-sector or state/local government) that have more than 20 employees. Colleges and universities are not subject to COBRA laws. However, your college may offer a continuation of their health insurance. You will need to contact them to see if you can continue your student health insurance.
