Q:  An employee is terminated and elects COBRA plan. What length of time is the employer health plan account still identified with that empolyee. Or how does an employee's COBRA status effect the employers future premiums?

A:  COBRA is a continuation of the employer's group health plan.  The employee is able to keep the COBRA coverage for up to 18 months and some cases the employee's sposue & dependents for up to 36 months.   The  employer must offer the COBRA member (beneficiary) the same rights as an "active" employee and must give them the opportunity to change or modify their COBRA coverage during open enrollment.  The employer is required under COBRA law to inform the beneficiaries when open enrollments will occur. The COBRA employeeor dependents do not affect future premium increases by the insurance comapny.
