Q: I became unemployed and my company told me about COBRA, she said that if I still wanted insurance I have to go thru you guys. I NEED insurance! My employer told me that COBRA would give me insurance since I was laid off and it’s not giving me anything!
A: Your employer is required by law to offer you the continuation of their group health policy for up to 18 months if there are more than 20 employees. The only way to sign up for COBRA continuation is through your previous employer. However, some employer’s hire a 3rd party administrator to handle the COBRA paperwork for them. The previous employer or plan administrator has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA packet from your last day of group benefits. Once you elect COBRA, the insurance is retro-active, so you will not have a lapse in coverage.
